My Favorite Child

And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.” (Genesis 25:28)

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors.” (Genesis 37:3)

It never seemed to end well when parents had favorite children in the Bible, and it doesn’t bode well nowadays either.

We just had most of our adult children together at Christmas, we had a wonderful time, lots of laughs and inside jokes, and we shared some time around God’s Word talking about the first Christmas.

But, whenever the children all get together, it seems like the subject of the “favorite child” always pops up: “Mom, you KNOW ________ is your favorite child!” or, “Everyone knows I’M the favorite child”! Sibling rivalry is natural, and it helps us humans to learn how to deal with our sinful self who naturally feels envy and jealousy when someone else has something we want. But, my answer is always, “My favorite child is the one who is NOT pestering me right now!”

I’m so thankful that God is not like me. In fact, He delights in our pestering Him. He is the perfect Father.

And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?” (Luke 18:7)

He doesn’t play favorites either.

“For there is no partiality with God.” (Romans 2:11)

I think that we are ALL His favorite child, because He is God, He can do that!!

But you have to become His child first, by receiving the FREE GIFT of salvation that He offers us when we trust in His Son Jesus Christ as the only Way to a restored relationship with our Holy God, and so securing our home in Heaven when our life on earth is over.

I hope you have a Happy New Year — better than 2020 at least!
