Wherever you look, there is plenty of bad news in the world today, just check your news feed or watch the news on TV. Politicians are getting more crooked; entertainers are overdosing and/or divorcing; sports stars are using drugs to give them unfair advantage over their peers; ordinary people like you and I are being robbed, abused, or getting injured or killed in the crossfire of angry militant radicals; human beings seem to be getting more and more selfish and out of control — it is scary out there! All of these things can be summed up in one word — SIN! Sin is anything we think, say, or do that disobeys God’s laws for us. And every single human being has sinned, yes, that means you, too! Now, you may be thinking, “Why should I care about God’s laws? I don’t really believe in Him, so I don’t have to obey Him!” …Or do you?
Well, I have some Good News for you, and here’s the first piece of Good News – even if you choose not to love Him, God loves you! In fact, if you look at His laws, they really are for our own good, so we don’t hurt ourselves or each other, and for His glory – He IS God after all, He created the heavens and the earth, and if anyone should be worshiped, it is He! And, He loves you so much that even if you choose not to love Him now, he still offers to you a Free Gift!
But first, more Bad News (sorry, but bad news makes the good news good): God is holy and perfect, and because of that He cannot have anything sinful in His presence in Heaven – the place He has prepared for those who DO love Him. He is also a Perfect Judge, and a perfect Judge cannot let a guilty perpetrator go unpunished. In fact, the penalty (wages) He demands for sin is shed blood from a perfect sacrifice, and death. And we are ALL guilty – if you do the crime, you gotta do the time! We are ALL disobedient, and without Christ we are ALL bound to perish in a place called Hell, which the Bible tells us is a place where God is not present and which is characterized by constant fire and torment – not a place you want to go for eternity!
“For the wages of sin is death…” Romans 3:23a
BUT, here’s the second piece of Good News (By the way, the Word “Gospel” means Good News!): Because God loves us and really desires everyone to be with Him in Heaven, He made a Way (John 14:6) for us to be made righteous (Holy and sinless in His sight) by sending His Perfect Only Son to shed His blood through a horrible death to take the punishment for our sin. He died to pay the debt we owed and couldn’t pay, the debt He paid but didn’t owe. Jesus became sin for us:
“For He [God the Father] hath made Him [Jesus Christ, His Only Begotten Son] to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
“So, what must I do?” You may ask. You must do what countless people before you have done (Acts 16:30,31): Believe in Jesus, in Who He is and what He did; and then the Holy Spirit will indwell you and enable you to progressively grow more like Jesus– that’s a good thing!
Romans 10:9-11: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed”
Romans 8:29: “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…”
God offers this spiritual Free Gift to you, and just like when someone offers you a physical free gift, your part is to reach out and receive it. Once you receive it you don’t have to pay for it – if you give someone a gift, do you expect them to pay you back? No, we respond with love toward the person, and want to show our appreciation to them. That’s all God wants from us.
“…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 3:23b
Won’t you believe the Good News, and accept His Free Gift today?
I hope you will. I’m glad I did.

Romans 5:15-21 “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
